Join us as we fundraise for Cité Soleil Community School (CSCS) in Haiti, to support our friend Sara Ko on her mission to help to provide education to those who need it the most.
One Love (Youn Lanmou): A Night for Haiti, will be on Friday May 25th from 6-9:30 pm at Broadmoor Baptist Church (click here for facebook event). We will be hosting a by-donation BBQ (hot dogs & hamburgers, with veggie options too), guest performers, raffle draws, some games, and maybe even a few infamous BYG “emu” dares! MORE INFORMATION:
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the millions of residents of Haiti. Since then, the country has been working to pick itself back up, but it has been a challenging journey. Cité Soleil, despite its name which means “Sun City,” has been considered by some many to be among the worst slums in the world. It is home to some 483,000 people, most living in tin shacks. The families living in Cité Soleil are at close proximity to the sporadic violence and instability that corresponds to the fact that many gangs wander the streets of the local neighbourhoods.
Cité Soleil Community School (www.lekolcscs.org), under the direction of Guy Morelus, has been a shining light in the city. It is supported by two U.S. based partner organizations: Haiti Partners (www.haitipartners.org) and Haiti Allies (www.haitiallies.org). The permanent school structure was damaged beyond repair by the earthquake in 2010, but was reopened on April 12, 2010 due to the generous assistance offered by its partners to quickly restore the school. Unfortunately, 85% of all schools were not as fortunate to reopen their doors as quickly as CSCS. Currently CSCS offers preschool to grade 7 education, English classes, and Computer & Information Technology classes. It is without a doubt that education is one of the most important rights that a child should have, and CSCS is playing a large role in providing this right to hundreds of children in the Cité Soleil area.
Broadmoor Baptist Church (www.bbchurch.ca) has been a proud supporter of CSCS. Sara Ko (amou.tumblr.com) is one of our own from Richmond BC, and has been working with the school in Haiti for the past two years. CSCS hopes to build a permanent structure for the school, acquire more land to develop a secondary school, and be able to provide teacher training workshops. Recently, CSCS has been approved for a $20,000 matching grant from the SG Foundation. Another way you can support Sara is through The Apparent Project (www.apparentproject.org), through which you can buy recycled, one-of-a-kind handmade necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more.
